The works on display here at Kornfeld Gallery feel like pages from a short life diary. They were created during my artist residency in Berlin from October to December last year, and include fourteen oil paintings—some on panel , but most on canvas.Actually, this was my first artist residency in Berlin, and it gave me a chance to experience the city not as a tourist, but more like a temporary local. I tried to fully immerse myself in this unfamiliar place, and through painting, I captured the emotions it stirred in me. While I was in Berlin, I always recalled two books :One is Hermann Hesse’s Steppenwolf ,antother is Milan Kundera’s Life is Elsewhere. Not long after I arrived, winter set in. The sudden shift in daylight, along with being in a completely new environment, brought on a wave of loneliness. I asked a friend to bring me Steppenwolf from China, and when I reread it, I felt something click. Berlin—this city of artists, exiles, and outsiders—felt like a city of Steppenwolves. It mirrored the loneliness and chaos I was feeling inside. As for Life is Elsewhere—that book speaks to every artist’s longing. For me, Berlin became a kind of “elsewhere,” a distant place I had dreamed of reaching. But while I did escape my usual life for a moment, I realized something important: even “elsewhere” eventually becomes “here.” That longing doesn’t disappear—it just shifts. These fourteen oil paintings are shaped by those reflections. They’re emotional snapshots. Together, they form a personal visual diary of my time in Berlin.
